I Married My School Sweetheart—Then A Phone Call Changed Everything On Our First Anniversary

I dated Aaron for fifteen years before he proposed.

I know how that reads. I’ve typed it out at two in the morning more times than I’d like to admit, and I’ve watched my own reaction to it change — from the pride I used to carry it with, to the rueful laugh of someone who now understands what she was actually waiting for, to where I am now, which is something quieter and harder to name.

He held my hand on my grandmother’s porch swing the summer I turned sixteen. My mother had just passed, and I was not yet sure how to be a person without her. Aaron sat beside me and didn’t try to say the right thing. He just held on. And I thought, this is the one. The way you think things at sixteen, as though the certainty of it makes it permanently true.

For a long time, it felt true.

What Fifteen Years Actually Looked Like From the Inside

After college, Aaron and I moved into a small apartment with one parking spot and a kitchen window that faced a brick wall. I worked at a marketing firm. He sold cars. Every Friday we ordered the same pad Thai from the same place, and I told myself this was the kind of love that did not need to be dramatic.

Every Valentine’s Day, every birthday, every Christmas, I caught myself watching his hands across the table. Just for a moment. Just in case.

The box never came.

When I brought it up gently — and I did bring it up, because I am not the kind of woman who waits entirely in silence — Aaron would give me the same soft smile that had been his answer to everything since we were teenagers.

“Baby, a ring isn’t the whole thing,” he’d say. “I’m saving. I want to do it right. I want to give you everything.”
