Part 2: The Bitter Aftertaste – News

Chloe stood frozen, her face completely pale, looking at her mother with a mixture of horror and profound disappointment.

Mrs. Evelyn remained on the floor, her tears suddenly drying up. The pathetic, crying mother disappeared, and in her place sat a cold, bitter woman whose mask had been permanently shattered. She glared up at me, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.

“You think you won, don’t you?” she spat, her voice dropping the trembling act entirely, becoming sharp and malicious. “You think you can just record me in my own son’s house and kick me out? You’re nothing, Natalia. You came from nothing, and you will leave with nothing. Richard is my son. He will always choose me. Blood is thicker than water, you pathetic little bitch.”

“Mom, shut up!” Richard roared, turning on her with a fury I had never seen in him before. “Shut up! How could you do this? To my wife? To me? You poisoned her! You staged a crime scene in my bed! Get out of my house! Get out right now before I call the police!”

“You wouldn’t call the police on your own mother, Richard,” Mrs. Evelyn said, slowly standing up and brushing off her skirt. The arrogance in her voice was sickening. She knew how much power she held over him. She knew he had spent his entire life trying to please her. “Think about the scandal. Think about what people will say. You won’t do a thing.”

She looked at me, a cruel, triumphant smirk returning to her lips. “And as for her… let’s see how long she stays when she realizes you’re broke.”

I frowned, a sudden chill creeping down my spine that had nothing to do with the soup. “What are you talking about?”

Mrs. Evelyn chuckled, a dry, rattling sound that made the hairs on my arms stand up. She reached into her purse and pulled out a set of keys, tossing them onto the vanity.

“This house? The down payment? The deed?” Mrs. Evelyn smiled, her eyes gleaming with a dark, hidden secret. “Richard didn’t buy this house with his hard work, Natalia. He used the family trust. The trust that I control. And according to the clauses your loving husband signed three months ago to secure the funds…”

She leaned in closer to me, her breath smelling faintly of the same bitter scent as the soup.

“…if you two divorce, or if he kicks me out of his life, the house automatically reverts back to my name. And the bank accounts? The joint savings you two have been building? They’re tied to my corporate entity. You want to call the cops, Richard? Go ahead. But by tomorrow morning, you and your precious wife will be sleeping in his car.”

Richard froze. He looked at his mother, his face draining of what little color he had left. “Mom… you promised you wouldn’t enforce that. You said that was just for tax purposes.”

“I lied,” she whispered softly, her eyes fixed entirely on me. “I told you, Natalia. A daughter-in-law walks in wearing a white dress, and leaves carrying a black suitcase. I am going to ruin you. Both of you, if I have to.”

The room plunged into a suffocating silence once again. Richard looked completely broken, caught between the horrifying truth of his mother’s malice and the sudden, terrifying reality of losing everything we had worked for. Chloe stepped back, completely washing her hands of the situation, while Mrs. Evelyn stood tall, waiting for us to beg for her mercy.

But as I looked at her smirk, and then at my trembling husband, a strange, cold clarity washed over me.

“You really think you’re the smartest person in the room, don’t you, Evelyn?” I said softly.

“I know I am,” she sneered.

“Then you forgot one very important detail,” I said, reaching over to my laptop and clicking on a second tab that had been running in the background the entire time.

A new screen popped up, showing a live interface with a red blinking word in the top right corner: STREAMING LIVE.

Mrs. Evelyn’s smirk vanished instantly.

“What is that?” she demanded, her voice suddenly losing its posture.

“This isn’t just a local recording, Evelyn,” I said, a slow, dangerous smile finally spreading across my face. “Three weeks ago, when I realized you were tampering with my things, I set up this camera to stream directly to a private, secure cloud server. But tonight, when you brought that soup up to my room… I changed the stream settings from private to public.”

I turned the laptop screen toward her, showing the live viewer count and the chat box scrolling at a blinding speed.

“Right now, over four thousand people are watching this live. Your neighbors, your church group, the board members of your charity foundation, and the local police department’s public tip line—I tagged them all in the link twenty minutes ago.”

Mrs. Evelyn gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she watched the comments flood the screen, reading her name, her crimes, and demands for her arrest.

“You… you wouldn’t…” she whimpered, backing away.

“Oh, it’s already done,” I said. “But that’s not the best part.”

I leaned forward, my eyes locking onto hers with absolute finality.

“The best part is what just appeared outside our window.”

Right on cue, the loud, piercing wail of police sirens echoed down the street, their blue and red lights flashing violently against our bedroom walls. But before anyone could move toward the stairs, a heavy, metallic crash shook the entire foundation of the house.

The front door hadn’t just been opened. It had been breached.

And then, a booming voice echoed from the stairwell, but it wasn’t the police. It was a voice that made Mrs. Evelyn’s face go from pale to completely translucent.

“Evelyn!” the voice roared from downstairs. “Where is she?!”

Richard gasped, his eyes widening in pure terror. “Oh my god… no. It can’t be him.”

I looked at Mrs. Evelyn, who was now trembling so violently she could barely stand. The master manipulator had finally run out of moves, because the man coming up the stairs was the one person who held a secret far darker than the one she had just used against us.
