PART 2 : The Architecture of Guilt

PART 2 : The Architecture of Guilt

I pulled him close with the last ounce of my strength, my fingers digging into the fabric of his pristine white lab coat. As the world began to fade into a cold, dark blur, I pressed my lips near his ear and whispered the truth.

“The photos were fake, Nicolás… and your mother poisoned my tea this morning to stop the audit.”

Nicolás staggered backward, his face draining of all color. He looked at me, then down at my trembling, convulsing body. The pieces of the puzzle he had refused to look at for nine months violently slammed together in his mind.

“Code Blue! We need to intubate now!” María’s voice pierced through his shock.

The doors swung open, and I was wheeled rapidly into the operating room. For a split second, the great Dr. Herrera stood frozen in the hallway, his hands shaking so violently he could barely snap on his surgical gloves. The empire he had protected, the mother he had believed, the arrogance he had worn like armor—it was all a lie.

He hadn’t been protecting his legacy. He had been executing his own family.

Code Blue

Inside the OR, the atmosphere was chaotic. The monitor was flatlining, a long, continuous tone filling the sterile room.

“Dr. Herrera, we need to perform an emergency crash C-section,” the chief resident shouted, looking at him anxiously. “Doctor? We need your call!”

Nicolás closed his eyes, took a deep, ragged breath, and forced the trembling out of his hands. The arrogant tycoon was gone; only the surgeon remained.

“Scalpel,” he commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, focused calm.

For the next twenty minutes, Nicolás fought the most terrifying battle of his career. Every cut, every stitch, every drop of blood felt like a penance. When he finally delivered the infant, the room held its breath. A second later, a loud, sharp cry echoed against the tiled walls.

“It’s a healthy baby girl, Doctor,” the resident whispered.

But Nicolás barely looked up. “Keep her stable. We’re losing the mother. Start a massive blood transfusion and prep the gastric lavage—run a full toxicology screen immediately.”

He refused to let me slip away. For two agonizing hours, he hand-stitched the damage his mother’s malice had caused, pouring his own soul into keeping my heart beating. When the monitor finally normalized into a steady, rhythmic beep, Nicolás slumped against the operating table, completely spent.

The True Owner

I woke up late the next morning to the soft, rhythmic hum of a postpartum recovery room. The sunlight streaming through the window was warm, completely unlike the freezing rain from nine months ago.

Sitting in a chair beside my bed was Nicolás. His custom suit jacket was gone, his sleeves were rolled up, and his eyes were bloodshot. In his arms, he held a tiny bundle wrapped in a pink blanket. He was looking down at her with a vulnerability I had never seen in him before.

When he noticed my eyes open, he stood up carefully and walked over.

“The toxicology report confirmed arsenic derivative,” Nicolás said, his voice completely broken. “The police arrested my mother at her estate two hours ago. The financial documents you tried to give me… I finally read them. She was using my name to front the embezzlement. If you hadn’t filed those reports with the federal board before coming here, I would be in a cell next to her….
